I bought an 89 Jeep Wrangler today and the steering is so loose you cant keep it on the road. It plays a lot when trying to turn and you have to turn the steering wheel half a turn even to get it to nudge over. What could be wrong with it?

The first thing to check is for worn out tie rods or steering linkages. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth and see if there is any free play in the joints. This is most likely the problem. You can also adjust the free play in the steering box. There is a screw with a lock nut. You loosen the lock nut first and then turn the screw in clockwise, but not too tight.
