How many miles can a jeep wrangler go before it needs a new engine?

by admin on September 8, 2010

I am wanting to buy this jeep wrangler, and it has a new paint job and new tires and it’s 00, but it has 98,000 miles on it. The only other jeep in town that I am interested in is ,000 miles on it and it has 30,000 miles on it. But it is really worth the extra ,000?
any by the way, it’s a 1997 jeep wrangler

If it has a 4.0 engine in it, expect it to run into the 300,000 mile mark. Wranglers last forever *if* you take good care of them. Whether it hits that kind of mileage is entirely your call. I would go for the older one honestly, saves you some money. I would also carfax the VIN and bluebook the value. You never know where this thing has been. Try to bargain a little as well. Good luck and congrats on your new Jeep!

Donny, Jeeps are the cheapest vehicles to maintain I’ve ever had. I also do my own maintenance, which is EASY.

They will last a long time my Friend had a 91 wrangler with 230,000 on it and it ran fine but the mileage was all high way.

there not the best in the world buy a care will last long based on how you treat the car and what kind of shape its is in

Don’t buy it now. As the economy gets worse, you can probably get a LOT better deal in a few months. Worth the wait.

Neither one is worth the price.
They are 11 years old.
I know people that own Jeep’s. I have not been impressed.
The people seem to be always repairing them at a higher cost than normal vehicles.
Also, check prices on http://www.kellybluebook.com

I definitely would not buy the one that was repainted with new tires.
Sure, it looks good sitting in the driveway.
Peace of mind mechanically should enter in here.

If you decide to purchase either one, have them checked out by a certified mechanic before buying.
Not a friend that supposedly knows cars !

Joe, you said it. If you maintain your own vehicles they will last a long time, as my Chevy’s do.
Maintenance is the key point.
I stand by my original answer.

I’d buy the older one..Jeeps last forever!!! but…8000 for the 97 is still too much…

I would expect that a 97 should be less than $8,000.
Anyhow, I think the 90′s Jeeps are great vehicles, provided you stick with the 4.0, 6 cyl engine. They typically run to 300,000 miles before they die (provided they are cared for properly). I have bought a couple of 90′s Jeeps with the 4.0 6 cyl engine at about 100k miles. Just listen very carefully when it’s running that you don’t hear any pinging or tapping. You can expect to replace some parts like a radiator or some sensors after 100k miles, but that’s not a big deal.
Are you sure you want a Wrangler? They ride kind of rough and don’t have a lot of room. People buy them to off road.
Don’t overlook the Cherokee or Grand Cherokee Laredo. You should be able to get one in about the $5,000 range. Again, stick with the 4.0 6 cyl engine.
